Performance for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women of Canada. Canada’s unions staged a unique and powerful performance with music Electric Pow Wow Drum by A Tribe Called Red, which featured video, and holograms projected behind a first nations dance that honours Canada’s missing and murdered Indigenous women.
The women were filmed in traditional dress underwater so they would appear as suspended holograms, moving unrestricted without gravity, similar to the movement of ghosts. This required a lot of intricate rotoscoping to get the job completed, due to the extensive costume pieces and hair.
The flowing red fabric was also utilized for secondary elements. This was inspired by the red dresses, often hung in public spaces, represent the lives lost and the absence of these women and girls.
The results and meaning of this piece can be felt through the visual performance and reflected in the heartfelt comments left below the online video, continueing to giving a voice to those affected by the on-going crisis of gender based violence against indigenous women.
